CHAPTER 14

Jackson stared warily at the computer screen. He willed himself to concentrate. The tightness in his chest had nothing to do with work and everything to do with the decision he made about Ruby. He pressed the button to print the relevant papers then realized he already printed them, twice.

“Fuck.” Jackson balled the extra pages and threw them across the room in the general direction of the garbage can.

Eric walked by Jackson’s open door just as the papers bounced off the wall and landed feet from its intended target.

“What’s up?” Eric asked, walking into Jackson’s office.

“Just working on the Winchester project.”

“When did we get the Winchester project?” Eric leaned against the desk.

“Don’t you ever pay attention to business?”

“Rarely.” Eric picked up a stress ball from Jackson’s desk.

“You should be paying attention to the Winchester project.” Jackson turned back to his papers. “It’s going to bring us four million dollars in profit.”

“Well, you have fun with that.”

Jackson glared at his friend.

“Is that the reason for the tantrum?” Eric pointed at the crumpled papers.

“No.”

“You want to talk about it?”

“No.”

“Okay.” Eric stood to leave.

“What are you doing today?” Jackson asked.

“Playing basketball.”

“That’s not work,” Jackson said.

“It depends on who I’m playing with.” Eric gave him a significant look.

Jackson rubbed his hand across his forehead. He hated when Eric tried to be enigmatic. “Who are you playing basketball with?”

“Jerry Collins.”

Jackson stopped rubbing his forehead. It was an important meeting. Jerry Collins knew everyone in business and government. He was a power player. Jerry could give him a bump if he endorsed Jackson. “Why do you get to have all the fun and I have to do all the work?”

“Because I’m good at networking, and you’re good at the actual nuts and bolts,” Eric said. “We all have our strengths.”

“Go. Make Jerry happy. See if you can’t get a handle on who he’s going to support for the Senate seat. If he’s willing to back me, pin him down for a campaign fundraiser.”

“Will do.” Eric threw the stress ball at Jackson who deftly caught it. “Don’t work too hard. Try to get out of here before nightfall. It’s a beautiful day.”

Jackson managed to leave the office with a few minutes of daylight left. On his way home, his mind once again drifted to Ruby and Noah. It had been a few days since he saw Noah last. He should call or maybe Skype.

When he got home, he opened his computer and Skyped.

Ruby’s face appeared in the computer screen “Finish the book?”

He felt the tightening in his chest again. “Not yet. I called to see Noah.”

“I’ll get him,” Ruby said and disappeared.

Noah spent a few minutes saying hello then he ran off with Trey. Jackson spent most of the call talking to Ruby. She teased him about being a slow reader. He heard sporadic squeals in the background letting him know Noah was having a good time. Occasionally, Ruby would turn her attention to the boys to say “Slow down” or “Who wants a time out.” But it was clear she had things well in hand.
